Good Mews Fundraising

One of the most important volunteer activities you can do for Good Mews is helping with fundraising. We are looking for more people to help at events, plan events, or better yet, be in charge of an event. We are always looking for creative people who may have new ideas to help us raise money.

Not all fundraisers have to be huge, so if you have a “small” idea and can be in charge, we need you!

Flea Market Success

We had another great Saturday to finish up this year’s flea market!  We are still waiting on the exact total but we made over $18,000!!

A huge thank you to all the wonderful volunteers who helped make this the most successful Flea Market ever. We couldn’t have done this without all of the volunteer help and all of the very generous donors we had this year!!

Serendipity’s Big Adventure

Serendipity’s big day began on February 14th...a sweet day for a sweet girl...oops, wrong cat!  Serendipity really couldn’t be described as a sweet girl. In fact, she had been adopted two other times in her life but got returned because she was aggressive. Over the years, “Dip” has certainly mellowed, but still not sure the adjective to use for her would be sweet.

However, a long time volunteer named Janet did always have a soft spot for Dip. Even thousands of miles between them couldn't stop this adoption. So Dip began her big adventure to her new home in Oregon. The day began with a tranquilizer, harness and a leash...not 3 favorites for any cat.

Then the ride to the airport and her trek through security. Not knowing what to expect, Dip was a trooper even though one airport employee did back away, just in case, once Dip came out of her carrier.

The next big step was getting her puppy pad changed and she was ready for her flight. To everyone’s surprise she was quiet and didn’t make a peep. But the biggest surprise of the day was when Dip got to Janet’s house, came out of the carrier, rubbed against her face and purred and made biscuits.

It just goes to show that there is the right home for every cat… even if you have to wait years and go thousands of miles. Serendipity’s life is really just beginning in her new home and she is ready to begin her life as a loving cat!

Petsmart Adoptions

Mark your calenders!

We are pleased to announce on Saturday, February 24th we will begin off-site adoptions at Petsmart at Merchants Walk, located at 1285 Johnson Ferry Road in Marietta.  Our plan is to be there on every third Saturday for adoption days.*

The best part is that if you don’t find the perfect cat for yourself at Petsmart, you can go down the street to see 100 more at our shelter location!

Our beautiful Miss Rose

It is with great sadness that we inform you that Miss Rose passed away on Saturday, December 16th.  Volunteers noticed that she was having trouble breathing and rushed her to the emergency room.  Although we knew that she had a heart murmur, she had never shown any symptoms of distress.  Her chest x-ray showed a great deal of fluid, and it appears that she went into sudden heart failure.  At the advice of the ER doctor and a Good Mews veterinary advisor, Miss Rose was humanely euthanized in the loving arms of a volunteer.

In recent months Miss Rose became more outgoing and trusting, and she was even so comfortable at the shelter that she often played with little mice, string toys and other kitties.  Some of us were sad because Miss Rose was never adopted, but it was clear to see that Miss Rose felt that Good Mews was her home and we were her family.  Although it was hard to let her go, we loved her too much to let her suffer.  She will be greatly missed.

Stitch

Good_Mews

Hi There! My name is Stitch. Do you like my white snowshoes? I’ve been told by many (and I have to agree) that I am a handsome, affectionate boy. It’s hard to believe my best gal pal, Lilo, and I were unceremoniously dumped at a pet food store in April. Lilo and I could tell you some stories, but we’ve decided to look to the future (and not dwell on the past). I’m pretty mellow and enjoy just hanging out with people (and Lilo of course). I’ll even be your couch potato buddy as long as you give me pets and love. There’s one more important thing you should know. Since I’m so attached to Lilo (and we compliment each other so well), we really need to stay together.

Meet Your Match

Good Mews is very excited to announce we will be the first shelter in Georgia to roll out the ASPCA®’s Meet Your Match Feline-ality™ Program. We plan to have it up and running by late summer!

Meet your Match for felines was introduced by the ASPCA® in 2007.  The launch of Feline-ality™ in 2007 is the latest addition to the ASPCA®’s Meet Your Match™ constellation of adoption programs that include research-based animal behavior assessments—all aimed at increasing adoption rates, and reducing return rates at shelters, thus combating the problem of pet overpopulation in shelters today.

According to the ASPCA®, “the key to developing successful adoptions lies in making good matches between adopters and pets, thus creating lasting bonds,” said Dr. Emily Weiss, the ASPCA’s senior director of shelter behavior programs, and researcher of ASPCA®’s Meet Your Match™. “Feline-ality™ is a tool that does precisely this; and everyone—adopters, shelter staff, and most of all, the cats—benefits from the program.”

Meet Your Match™ is a program of ASPCA®.
