1988-2008... 20 years of purrs... 20 years of purpose...
Update: As everyone in rescue knows, this season’s kitten season is never ending. We have many kittens in the shelter and in our foster care program. June and July were very successful adoption months for us as we offered our “2 Fur 1” adoption special.
Due to the large amount of kitties in foster care who are waiting to enter the shelter, we hope to have huge adoption numbers again in August.
Due to popular demand our June and July, “2 Fur 1” special is being extended until the end of August.
That means you can adopt any 2 cats or kittens for the adoption fee of one!
We brought in lots more foster kittens this week so check them out!

Good Mews has been awarded a $6,000 grant for the support and expansion of our foster care program. Our Grant Committee applied for it last November and just received notification of the award. This sum will go a long way toward caring for more abandoned and abused kitties in the coming year and we are grateful to Petsmart Charities for their generosity and to our Grant Committee for their continuing efforts to secure funding for Good Mews.
This grant will enable us to rescue more cats and kittens from euthanasia at animal control, and bring them to our Good Mews foster homes as space allows.

Update: Bonnie and Topaz went to their forever home on Saturday, July 12!
Bonnie and Topaz were rescued from a breeder who was unable to handle all of the cats in his care. They are both purebred Maine Coons and were rescued with 2 others, Pandora and Magnolia (who has already been adopted).
Topaz is our true miracle kitty.
When diagnosed with a mass after we took her in, we quickly took her to a specialist who confirmed the mass was actually a baby. Because she came to us extremely emaciated, that was the last thing we expected. Although thankful it was not a mass, we did learn she needed to have an emergency c-section as the baby should have been born 30 days earlier.
We rushed her to one of our GM vets, who performed the c-section. After the surgery, we learned that a portion of her uterus had burst so her body was not able to give birth to the 2 babies inside of her. Unfortunately, the babies did not take a breath once delivered but we were excited to have been able to save Topaz. According to the doctor, he stated with the condition of the uterus, it was a medical miracle that she survived.
Topaz upon arrival was horribly matted.

Bonnie, upon rescue was very shy and had an upper respiratory infection. She immediately went into a isolation room where she remained for a couple of weeks. She was terribly afraid and unhappy in her cage and spent her hours huddled in a bed. Finally she recovered, got spayed and was able to enter our main shelter.
Bonnie upon arrival was very thin.
Topaz by now had fully recovered and was busy enjoying the shelter and enjoying her new life. Bonnie was still horribly shy.
Until, the day Bonnie discovered Topaz was there. Bonnie was behind the door in the transition room when she heard Topaz’ cute little chirping sounds. As she heard Topaz, a new cat instantly transformed into the shy Bonnie we had known for weeks. We opened the door and Bonnie ran to Topaz as if it were a movie. Those of us who witnessed it have all said we have never seen anything quite like it.
Best Friends!
Today, Bonnie and Topaz are rarely separated. They spend hours sleeping together with their arms wrapped around one another, grooming each other and even eating from the same bowls. It makes us wonder if Bonnie is Topaz’ mother!
Whatever their relationship, these two are really best friends. While Bonnie is still quiet compared to the gregarious Topaz, she is now so happy and relaxed. Quite different than the Bonnie who entered our shelter.
This really makes you believe in the true bonds that animals share and the importance of them sharing their life together.

Good Mews is very excited to announce we will be the first shelter in Georgia to roll out the ASPCA®’s Meet Your Match Feline-ality™ Program. We plan to have it up and running by late summer!

Meet your Match for felines was introduced by the ASPCA® in 2007. The launch of Feline-ality™ in 2007 is the latest addition to the ASPCA®’s Meet Your Match™ constellation of adoption programs that include research-based animal behavior assessments—all aimed at increasing adoption rates, and reducing return rates at shelters, thus combating the problem of pet overpopulation in shelters today.
According to the ASPCA®, “the key to developing successful adoptions lies in making good matches between adopters and pets, thus creating lasting bonds,” said Dr. Emily Weiss, the ASPCA’s senior director of shelter behavior programs, and researcher of ASPCA®’s Meet Your Match™. “Feline-ality™ is a tool that does precisely this; and everyone—adopters, shelter staff, and most of all, the cats—benefits from the program.”
Meet Your Match™ is a program of ASPCA®.
