love is in the air!

UPDATE: these 2 boys were put on hold this weekend and will be going home for Christmas! This is the best present ever for the two lovebirds!

Two of our long term residents, Cody and Woodruff have discovered true love at Good Mews.

Cody has been with us since he has been a kitten and is now 7 years old. Woodruff a.k.a. Woody has also been with us for several years.

Both boys are shy and although they get along well with the other cats, both have always been a bit of the loner type. Well, things have now changed for the boys and love is in the air!

Cody and Woody have discovered each other and are now seen snuggling together on a cat tree, curled up in the same basket or just hanging close by one another. How nice when true love blossoms for 2 kitties who have always been rather independent.

Both boys are still waiting for that special someone. If you are that special someone, who doesn’t mind if their kitties are shy and want to give a permanent home to these two love birds, Cody and Woody are here just for you.

Both boys are also members of our kitty keeper program so even if you cannot take them home, please think about sponsoring them with a monthly donation!

Soldier’s story

Here is the story of one very brave little kitten, as told by his foster mom Karen Smith!
Good_Mews

Just because a cat is blind doesn’t mean that they cannot be a very happy pet and make you very happy.  In fact, it is often difficult to remember that Soldier is blind when he is in a familiar environment because his sense of hearing and smell is so much greater than ours.  Soldier became blind from an infection in both eyes which eventually developed ulcers which ruptured.  He was found as a 4-month-old kitten wandering around in an apartment complex.  A Good Samaritan that he kept following behind took him to the vet and we were fortunate to get Soldier into a foster home here at Good Mews!  He loves to play and will purr constantly after being picked up and hugged.  He follows his foster parent from room to room without bumping into any doors or walls.  He loves to touch and sleep in your lap and will “feel” your face with his paws and gives you kisses!  He plays all around the house, even jumping on and off the couch to attack his toy mice!  He relies on his memory to help him navigate through the home.  Occasionally, he bumps into something, but just shakes it off and continues on his merry way.

Good_Mews

He loves to be talked to and adapts to his limitations.  He runs after his favorite noises, (a human scooping his litter box) but not as fast as a sighted cat.  He likes to have his food and water bowl and his litter box in the same spot all the time!

Soldier now has a new friend named Piper who is about his age and was recently rescued by Good Mews from an office park where he was trapped between an office building and a retaining wall. Piper is very shy and Soldier is teaching him the ropes on how to be an outgoing playful kitten. Someone forgot to tell Soldier he was blind and had more challenges in his life than seeing kitties!

If you would like to help Soldier, Piper and more kitties at Good Mews, please DONATE today!

More adventures with Zachary and Blake!

It’s been a while since we checked in on the antics of Zachary and Blake. Gone are the two cats who lived with fear in their eyes. Gone are the two cats who didn’t know if they were getting their next meal. And gone are the two cats who were unsure of how to be cats!

Good_MewsGood_Mews

Today, Zachary and Blake are the center of attention at the shelter. It’s not unusual to see Blake carrying around his favorite ball toy with a bell in it or the two running together back and forth. They are always ready to join in for a game of laser light or feather toy!

And you can always count on them for being the most vocal at meal time. Usually at wet food time, you will find Zachary in everyone else’s food because he has already eaten his 2 plates full. When he does come up for air, you will probably see remnants of food on his nose because he practically dives into the bowl.

These boys are such a great example of how your money goes to help each and every cat we take into our shelter. If you would like to support Zachary, Blake and all of our other great kitties at GM, please click I would like to help!

Both are still available for adoption!

Meet Your Match

Good Mews is very excited to announce we will be the first shelter in Georgia to roll out the ASPCA®’s Meet Your Match Feline-ality™ Program. We plan to have it up and running by late summer!
Good_MewsGood_Mews
Meet your Match for felines was introduced by the ASPCA® in 2007.  The launch of Feline-ality™ in 2007 is the latest addition to the ASPCA®’s Meet Your Match™ constellation of adoption programs that include research-based animal behavior assessments—all aimed at increasing adoption rates, and reducing return rates at shelters, thus combating the problem of pet overpopulation in shelters today.

According to the ASPCA®, “the key to developing successful adoptions lies in making good matches between adopters and pets, thus creating lasting bonds,” said Dr. Emily Weiss, the ASPCA’s senior director of shelter behavior programs, and researcher of ASPCA®’s Meet Your Match™. “Feline-ality™ is a tool that does precisely this; and everyone—adopters, shelter staff, and most of all, the cats—benefits from the program.”

Meet Your Match™ is a program of ASPCA®.
