The magic of a shy cat!

For anyone who has ever adopted a shy animal, you truly understand one of the greatest human-animal bonds you will ever experience. Recently one of our shy kittens, Arugula, a.k.a. Aggie was adopted by a volunteer.
Here is her happy ending!

Happy New Year, Good Mews!
It’s Aggie, writing you with an update on my new home. I really like it here a lot! I have lots of beds to sleep in, and toys to play with, and trees to sit on and I even have my own special tree in my room! I still eat my breakfast and dinner in my room and when I am done, waiting for my mommy to come get me, I lay on my tree and relax and burp.

I have a brother and sister that are way older than me, and they just ignore me. I have another sister, Marlee, that plays with me. We run and chase and wrestle! I like her a lot..she is a lot of fun! Then I have another sister, Sydney. She hates me. When I first got here, she hissed and growled at me. Then she would sit and stare at me. Finally I got tired of her staring at me so I started to chase her. I chase her through the house really fast and daddy said it looks like lighting is going by. Mommy said that is naughty behavior and that we need to work on that, whatever that means!

One day I overheard my mommy telling someone there were two reasons why she brought me home. One, because she loved me, and two, because she did not think anyone else would bring me home because every time visitors came to the shelter I was always hiding under a pile of my friends. Well!!! I cant help it if I did not want anyone to look at me or to touch me! I was scared! It is not my fault I was shy. But after a few days of being home, I sure showed her! She looked at me and said ‘ Where is my shy little Aggie? She disappeared!’ See..with just a little time and patience, my true self came out! Now mommy says I am a little monster!

Every night we have ‘Aggie and Mommy’ time where we lay in the bed together. I roll around and we snuggle and mommy gives me kisses and I give her head butts and we talk. She tells me I am the sweetest, most affectionate kitten she has ever had! And she means it!! Can you believe it?? Me! I bet you don’t, but she is not lying.

We also talk about my sister and two brothers, Basil, Cilantro, and Pesto that are still at the shelter. I miss them. She says she still spends time with them. She gives them special messages for me and she says that they are doing a lot better. We say a prayer for them every night that they will get a special home just like mine in the new year..because we both know they will be just like me if they find their forever home.

Well, I better go. I hear my mommy fixing my dinner! I have to go yell and scream at her. She just loves that!
Thanks for all that you did for me!

Love,
Aggie Mae

If you are interested in meeting any of her siblings, Pesto, Basil and Cilantro are available for adoption.
They are still shy in the shelter and need a forever home to thrive to their fullest potential. Check them out in our Adoptable Animals.

Chadwick

Chadwick came to Good Mews three months ago after his owner entered a nursing home. At the age of 14 he was a strong, majestic, handsome boy. A few weeks ago he began to get sick and over the past few days had taken a turn for the worse. He had internal bleeding which most likely was associated with cancer. When he became uncomfortable he let us know he was ready to let go of the fight.
Good_Mews
Chadwick and his friend Squeak had been together for eleven years. With Squeak by his side, Chadwick crossed over the rainbow bridge on December 27, 2007.

As majestic as ever Chadwick passed very peacefully.

Although only with us for a short time, the impact that Chadwick had on all of us was enormous. He won’t be easily forgotten.

His friend Squeak is still waiting for her special new home for the new year.

Celebrate Seniors

This holiday season has brought both ups and downs for Good Mews. Several GM cats who had homes for many years got returned by their families and we helped more cats than usual who were abandoned during the holiday season.

But as 2007 is winding down, we are celebrating our most recent adoptions and celebrating seniors!

Woodruff and Cody who were recently featured on our home page (scroll down to see them) with their story of love have finally found their forever home this holiday season. Although Woodie is not quite a senior, he has been at the shelter for about 5 years. Cody at the age of 8 has been a GM resident since the age of 4 months.  Both boys who are shy went to a nice quiet home where we expect them to thrive. Whenever adopters open their hearts to a shy cat, there are so many happy endings. There is nothing like a shy cat who slowly gains your trust and the bond that you will continue to share with them for the rest of their lives.

Bugsy and Madison came to us when their owner developed severe allergies. After trying everything he could to overcome them he reluctantly brought his two cats to us. These kitties were so well cared for and his owner tried everything possible to try to keep them. As with any senior cat who enters GM, it is always very hard on them when they lose their family. Initially Madison had a tough time adjusting to shelter life, had to be fed with a syringe because she quit eating. Bugsy, too had difficulty and soon developed heart problems and hyperthyroidism.

Today, Madison is doing quite well and Bugsy’s condition has stabilized after many blood tests, rechecks and ultrasounds. The two of them found their forever home together and will spend the new year celebrating life outside of the shelter. Their new mom opened her heart to 2 senior cats in need of a new home. Bugsy craves human attention and Madison, although she is a bit more independent loves it too. Both kitties will be celebrating the new year in their life outside of Good Mews.

We would like to thank all of our GM supporters, friends and volunteers for another great year for our shelter. If you would like to help by making a year end donation in honor of Bugsy, Madison, Woodie, Cody and all of our kitties, please click DONATE.

Ringo

Good_Mews
Last spring, Ringo came to live at Good Mews after the vet clinic he lived at for 3 years was closing it’s doors. Prior to that no one knows his history because he was abandoned at the clinic. Upon coming to GM, it was immediately obvious that Ringo was sad. He quickly got depressed, lost his sparkle in his eye and quit eating unless he was fed by a syringe.

In April, one of our volunteers, Carole Bache came to see him as she is partial to senior orange cats. Immediately Ringo perked up, began to purr and slowly began to eat out of her hand. There was an instant connection for both Ringo and Carole.
Good_Mews
For the past 8 months, Ringo had the best life he ever had with Carole and his new feline companions. He fought a tough battle with kidney disease and sadly today he lost his fight. With Carole by his side, just as she has been for 8 months, Ringo was ready to cross over the Rainbow Bridge and passed very peacefully.

Ringo was part of our HALO program, which enables senior or special needs cats to get placed into a loving home while GM continues to pay for their medical bills. We believe that an older or sick cat deserves a home of their own, a bed to sleep in and a human of their very own. Good Mews is proud of this program and we currently have 17 cats in loving homes because of it.

The cats in our HALO program are some of the most expensive we have to provide for. It is easy to overlook their expenses since we don’t see them everyday and people may forget they are still part of the shelter’s medical budget. If you would like to help the cats in the HALO program or make a donation in memory of Ringo, please DONATE today.

Sunny D wasn’t as tough as his brother, Snickers and was a little timid in his new foster family.  It wasn’t long before he was looking for attention, and he has come out of his shell.

Meet Your Match

Good Mews is very excited to announce we will be the first shelter in Georgia to roll out the ASPCA®’s Meet Your Match Feline-ality™ Program. We plan to have it up and running by late summer!
Good_MewsGood_Mews
Meet your Match for felines was introduced by the ASPCA® in 2007.  The launch of Feline-ality™ in 2007 is the latest addition to the ASPCA®’s Meet Your Match™ constellation of adoption programs that include research-based animal behavior assessments—all aimed at increasing adoption rates, and reducing return rates at shelters, thus combating the problem of pet overpopulation in shelters today.

According to the ASPCA®, “the key to developing successful adoptions lies in making good matches between adopters and pets, thus creating lasting bonds,” said Dr. Emily Weiss, the ASPCA’s senior director of shelter behavior programs, and researcher of ASPCA®’s Meet Your Match™. “Feline-ality™ is a tool that does precisely this; and everyone—adopters, shelter staff, and most of all, the cats—benefits from the program.”

Meet Your Match™ is a program of ASPCA®.
