Volunteer Information Center

This new section will contain important information for our volunteers to know about our Good Mews cats and happenings around the shelter!

I will put new additions for the volunteers in bold lettering each time I update the site. Once the newest update has been in bold letters and been up for a while, it will go back to regular lettering and go to the bottom of the list. Then, new updates to follow will again be in bold letters! So, always check the entire list for anything you may have missed!

UPDATE: 7/9/08

**Recently one of our baby kittens ate part of a plastic toy. Luckily for him and us, he recovered and is fine. Going forward, please do not attach any toys to the cage doors or leave any toys that could be swallowed in any of the cat cages.

**Please follow the canned food guidelines for our kitties and report their eating habits. This is critical for us to know that kitties that are having issues with eating get enough food! Some cats may have additional instructions that go along with their wet food, such as Clyde that also gets dry food and water on his cat tree! Thanks for paying close attention so our kitties get what they need!

Helpful reminders for everyone to know:

** Please take a moment to read the signs you see around the shelter. It is our best way to communicate the constant changing needs of our cats! It is up to you to make our signs effective!

** For those volunteers who feed and clean for our cats, remember our canned food guidelines are a crucial part of your job. The purpose of these guidelines is to have an accurate report on whether or not certain cats are eating. The cats are on the list because they get special food or do not always eat well in the shelter. Following the guidelines helps keep our kitties healthy!

** If you ever cannot find a cat on the list to feed, please always ask shelter management. If no one is available, please ask one of your fellow volunteers!

** Help our sick kitties in isolation get better faster. Please never let those kitties run around the room because it spreads too many germs. Every cat in the isolation room has a different illness so they are isolated in separate cages! As always, remember to wash your hands after cleaning or giving medicine!

** Please remember to pick up all string toys and mylar toys and return them to the kitchen area in the shelter. The cats love these toys when you play with them but they can be dangerous if left unattended as the cats may eat them!

**No water fountains are allowed in the kitten room as our little kittens enjoy chewing on the cords!

**Over the next few months we will be doing evaluations of our kitties to get ready for the Meet Your Match adoption program. If you see a sign up in the shelter, please try to refrain from closing doors loudly, going to the restroom area, as we want these cats to have as few distractions as possible during their 15 minute evaluation. For now the evaluations take place in the restroom area.

Our volunteer Information Center will be updated several times a month. Please check back often so you will always know the latest shelter news! Spread the word to fellow volunteers!

Most importantly, a huge thank you to every volunteer. GM couldn’t do it without you! :-)

Meet Your Match

Good Mews is very excited to announce we will be the first shelter in Georgia to roll out the ASPCA®’s Meet Your Match Feline-ality™ Program. We plan to have it up and running by late summer!

Meet your Match for felines was introduced by the ASPCA® in 2007.  The launch of Feline-ality™ in 2007 is the latest addition to the ASPCA®’s Meet Your Match™ constellation of adoption programs that include research-based animal behavior assessments—all aimed at increasing adoption rates, and reducing return rates at shelters, thus combating the problem of pet overpopulation in shelters today.

According to the ASPCA®, “the key to developing successful adoptions lies in making good matches between adopters and pets, thus creating lasting bonds,” said Dr. Emily Weiss, the ASPCA’s senior director of shelter behavior programs, and researcher of ASPCA®’s Meet Your Match™. “Feline-ality™ is a tool that does precisely this; and everyone—adopters, shelter staff, and most of all, the cats—benefits from the program.”

Meet Your Match™ is a program of ASPCA®.
