1988-2008... 20 years of purrs... 20 years of purpose...
Each month we will be doing a spot light on one of our “Extra Special Kitties”.
Being a no-kill shelter differentiates us from other traditional shelters. Being a no-kill means we have kitties with “Extra Special” needs that would otherwise not make it in a traditional shelter.
Our featured extra special kitty is Penquin.

Penquin, originally named by one of our teenaged volunteers, was rescued from animal control after being brought there with a traumatic injury. It was suspected that Penquin had been hit by a car. When we got him, he could barely stand and certainly could hardly walk. His front foot was crippled and turned way under and his back leg looked as though it was barely in the socket. it seemed to protrude outward when he did try to stand.
At first when he tried to stand he was very wobbly and would fall over. After being checked out by our vets, we were told he needed at least 6 weeks of cage rest. We began giving him cosequin which is an anti-inflammatory and gave him his much needed cage rest.

Not much progress was made with his mobility as the weeks passed. But one day something changed!
I will never forget the day when Shannon, our former Executive Director, screamed my name to come into the isolation room where he was caged and Penquin was standing and walking.
We couldn’t believe it….. after many weeks he finally was walking. His front foot worked better and didn’t bend anymore in quite the same way it did.
Penquin is a very nice cat but often gets overlooked on adoption days. He either stays to himself or may even be a bit grumbly if the other cats get too close. However when you spend one on one time with him, he is a very nice cat.
Penquin would thrive in a home of his own without 85 cats around him. Although he is extra special, he requires very little special treatment. He is still on anti-inflammatory medicine for his joints and also takes omega maxx which is a fish oil product which helps his fur and skin. Both medicines are given in his food so it will be very easy for his future owner.
