Meet your Match for felines was introduced by the ASPCA® in 2007.  The launch of Feline-ality™ in 2007 is the latest addition to the ASPCA®’s Meet Your Match™ constellation of adoption programs that include research-based animal behavior assessments—all aimed at increasing adoption rates, and reducing return rates at shelters, thus combating the problem of pet overpopulation in shelters today.

According to the ASPCA®, “the key to developing successful adoptions lies in making good matches between adopters and pets, thus creating lasting bonds,” said Dr. Emily Weiss, the ASPCA’s senior director of shelter behavior programs, and researcher of ASPCA®’s Meet Your Match™. “Feline-ality™ is a tool that does precisely this; and everyone—adopters, shelter staff, and most of all, the cats—benefits from the program.”

Every cat in the shelter will be assessed and given a specific personality type. This assessment reliably predicts, based on its “feline-ality,” how an individual cat is likely to behave in its new home. Then the adopter will fill out a survey which helps identify the adopter’s personal preferences and lifestyle that correlate with specific feline-alities. Adopters can then look for the cats with feline-alities that would be a good fit for their household and identify them by colors and feline-ality descriptions.

The personalities are named and color coded. A cat with a green color-coded description would be a “Party Animal”, “MVP” or “Leader of the Band.” Green cats are savvy, unflappable and adventurous.

A cat with an orange classification makes a great companion kitty, and would be called a “Sidekick,” “Executive” or “Personal Assistant.”

A cat with a purple classification is one that seeks affection, is quiet and stays out of trouble. It could be called a “Secret Admirer,” “Love Bug” or “Private Investigator.”

The Meet Your Match Program is the only adoption program available for shelters that is based solely on research that specifically combines the preferences of the adopter with the personality of the pet. Since the beginning of this program, participating shelters have reported an increase of adoptions by 46%, a decrease in the euthanasia rate up to 40% and 105 out of 107 adopters report they would seek out a shelter using the Meet Your Match program.

Good_Mews

Hello. My name is Silver and I haven’t had the best of luck in life. Thanks to Good Mews, things are finally starting to look up! I was rescued before being taken to a local county animal shelter. I had an injury to my right eye and it had to be removed. While recovering, I spent time in a foster home. My life has been a rollercoaster of ups and downs, so I can be leary of new humans at first. I’d be so grateful for a permanent, loving home. If you’re able and willing to be patient with me and give me lots of extra love and attention, I promise to work hard toward overcoming my fears.
