Zachary and Blake

Here are the boys....Zachary is the black one and Blake is the silver tabby.  Zach has that blank look in his eyes so often seen with cats from hoarding cases. Look at the size of Blake’s head compared to his body....see how skinny he is....

And so it begins again..... Zachary and Blake recently arrived at Good Mews after being rescued from yet another hoarder situation.  Their story is all too familiar these days.  Too many cats and dogs, being neglected, living in filth..... hoping for a better life.

Zachary and Blake are just two of the lucky ones we were able to rescue.  They are very sweet but very scared and unsure of what is happening around them.  They have the look of despair in their eyes.  They are not yet sure how to just be a cat, not sure yet how to trust......

But their story is just beginning.  Over the next few months we will follow the story of Zachary and Blake.  We will be giving updates and pictures as they make progress..... and get a new lease on life.

So far, the good news is that in the 2 weeks they have been with GM they have each gained ONE pound!! They left their intake cage today and entered the shelter....more news to follow, so check back on Zachary and Blake!

Some of the cats from this recent situation are still at Gwinnett county animal control.  Please contact them and help save a life!

Microchipping Clinic- A big success!

Thank you to everyone who came out today to support our first microchipping clinic.  We met so many wonderful people and had so much fun seeing all of the cats and dogs!  Our first clinic was very successful!!

For those of you who got your animals chipped; please allow 3-4 weeks for Home Again to have your pet registered with your information.  Until then, your pet is registered with Good Mews since all of the chips were currently registered to us!

Thank you to all of our volunteer veterinarians and vet techs for helping us today!

Thank you also to Grant with Crizo Pet Products for bringing out his beautiful cat trees and Jerry with Pawsibilities in Roswell for the wonderful organic dog and cat food sample bags.

Prudence’s story

I’ve made a donation today in memory of my kitty, Prudence. She was adopted from Good Mews on a very cold and windy New Year’s Eve in the early 1990’s. Volunteer Christi Fisher spent hours with me to find just the right kitty to take home. At the time, Prudence was around 5 years old and had been a resident of the shelter (then on Sandtown Road) for more than 3 years! Christi told me that Pru tended to be a little standoffish with prospective adopters, but that she was quite affectionate. It didn’t take but a minute for her to warm up to me and bury her nose in the crook of my arm.

Prudence knew immediately that she had found a home and she rewarded me every day with purrs and rubs and cat calls. She was very vocal and very social – all visitors to my home were greeted and asked a series of questions. She kept a close eye on repairmen and made sure everyone had the opportunity to pet her. But please, don’t pick her up, she’ll come to you. She withstood the adoption of two other Good Mews cats over the years, but preferred to think she was the only cat in the house.  I had to make the difficult decision to let the old girl go today. She was my devoted companion for 14 years and will be greatly missed. I hope more shelter visitors will consider the slightly aloof, older cat when then come to the shelter – they’ll be rewarded greatly for many years.

Petsmart Charities

Good Mews has been awarded a $6,000 grant for the support and expansion of our foster care program.

Our Grant Committee applied for it last November and just received notification of the award.

This sum will go a long way toward caring for more abandoned and abused kitties in the coming year and we are grateful to the Petsmart Charities Foundation for their generosity and to our Grant Committee for their continuing efforts to secure funding for Good Mews.

This grant will enable us to rescue more cats and kittens from death row in animal control, and bring them to our Good Mews foster homes as space allows.
